PRE-CONFERENCE MEETUP: "What Not to Do - Testing in Agile" + "Working with Tools For Testing"
Learn a skill, learn a tool (it's all about testing!)

Ramit Kaul: What Not to Do - Testing in Agile

11:00 - 11:30 AM ET

In the world of Agile, sometimes we forget or are carried away in the fast pace of sprints. With so much focus on delivering in time, all the time, we take shortcuts to reach Done status. A lot of focus in conferences is about what to do and how to do things effectively and efficiently. However, through this session, let us go back a little and remember what we should NOT do while testing if you are part of Agile.

Ajay Balamurugadas: "Working with Tools For Testing" - Presentation and Demo Session

Questions for Testers is a silly game with a serious purpose.

It’s an easy way to start interesting conversations. I use it to help testers to build connections. QfT works with teams who know each other well, and strangers who share an interest in testing. You can play it in person with cards from https://github.com/workroomprds/QuestionsForTesters , or online by using http://exercises.workroomprds.com/qft/ .

QfT uses a deck of questions about testing; each question has several answers. There are just a few answers for each question, and none are right or wrong. The game is for the group to guess what someone in the group might choose, to compare that with that person's actual choice, and (perhaps) to persuade each other into an alternative

We’ll gather in a large group to say hello and consider the rules. Here are the rules.
Process 1: Make a group.
Process 2: Take turns. Each turn, one of you reads a question, and its options, out loud – then chooses one option, privately. Harder decisions are more interesting.

Process 3: Talk. The reader may give points to anyone who predicts (or sways) their choice. Return to 2.

Ranking: Points are pointless.

We'll split into smaller groups, each with a handful of people. Each group plays the game, facilitators move between groups. After some time, we reconvene, split into different groups, and play again. Then we exchange contact details, set up times to talk again, and move on.

QfT is based on https://www.sussedthegame.co.uk . QfT is open source, and available for anyone to run at any event. QfT was developed, and is maintained, by @workroomprds.

PRE-CONFERENCE MEETUP: "NPV for Test Automation" talk + "Business Driven Test Automation" demo
Learn a skill, learn a tool (it's all about testing!)

Ashutosh Garg
"NPV for Test Automation"

4:00 AM - 4:30 AM ET
Test automation is the most in thing in testing. However, measuring the profitability of test automation is underrated. A lot of automation projects are just started, continued and then shunted without measuring the impact it created. Automation should be done with a purpose, either saving effort (or cost) or increasing your test coverage.
NPV or Net Present Value is a Financial framework used by firms to decide whether to start a project or not on the basis of profitability in the longer run. This talk aims to educate the listeners on how we can use the NPV Framework on test automation to decide whether to start the project or not and save the effort in the longer run.

Nishi Grover Garg
"Business Driven Test Automation"

4:30 AM - 5: 00 AM
The primary reason of test automation lagging behind in the software testing
lifecycle and becoming a technical debt later, is the inability to conceptualise and
create automation tests before the application is ready. Waiting for our
application to be developed and stable to begin automating our tests may not be
the smartest way and leads us to constantly playing catch-up with the new
features.

Sahi's latest release 9.0 introduces the brand-new concept
of Business-Driven Test Automation (BDTA) which solves the problem of
functional automation in a simple and elegant way. BDTA allows creation of
Business Scenarios very early in the development cycle - right at the feature
conceptualization stage. BDTA is an Intuitive and easy framework that allows
business testers to automate their tests easily. Testers can express the business
intent in natural language, record actions, parameterize and data drive the tests,
all through an intuitive UI. Watch an informative hands-on demo on Business
Driven Test Automation using Sahi Pro.

PRE-CONFERENCE MEETUP: "Externalization of Testcases for Quick Delivery ' Talk + "Tools are My Servants. And I am the Master" Workshop and Demo
Learn a skill, learn a tool (it's all about testing!)

Kunal Ashar
"Externalization of Testcases for Quick Delivery"

9:00 PM - 9:30 PM ET
Testcase management plays an important part in determining the success of automation. If we are spending too much time in modifying scripts and selecting test cases to execute after each deployment than we’re adding overhead to execution time and to the product delivery. Externalizing test cases help us to pre-plan cases that need to be executed based on the bug-fix/impact areas and it’s configurable without modifying the code-base.

Santhosh Tuppad
"Tools are my Servants. And I am the Master." - live demonstration

9:30 PM - 10:00 PM ET
I am always excited about the tools which can aid me in my mission. And that mission is, to inject my test idea and produce effective results. Since my school days, I have been using various tools/utilities/plugins/extensions to execute my idea. To me, it is not about the tool only but also the idea that comes first to the brain from a variety of thinking skills. For instance, if I do not know how to drive a sports utility vehicle skillfully, I cannot harness the power of the machine offered to me.

You are going to join me in this workshop for these 3 reasons:
1. Usage of tools to perform better testing
2. Increase your productivity and invest more time in testing
3. Just because you can

In this tools demonstration, I will be focussing on a variety of aspects or ways in how a specific tool can be used in your testing activity. And remember that, a tool offers you more than what you think it can achieve if and only the fuel is the right one to feed the tool. And that fuel is your creative ideas. In my childhood days and
adulthood, I have used tiny, teeny, and little tools or plugins to extract great results in my testing and achieving effective productivity. In short, tools are my servants and I am a good master.

The first and foremost idea is to have blueprint/architecture of what you want to achieve and then the tools or frameworks or piece of code is a matter of connecting the wires to power the building. Welcome to this lightning powerful tools demonstration workshop.

Context-Driven Performance Testing
The recent revolution in software development,  including agile / interactive development, cloud computing, continuous integration, and many more, opened new opportunities for performance testing and affected its role in performance engineering. For example, early and continuous performance testing is becoming the new norm. However, performance testing in general and specific performance testing techniques should be considered in full context:  including environments, products, teams, issues, goals, budgets, timeframes, risks, etc. The question is not what technique is better, the question is what technique (or what combination of techniques) to use in particular case (or, in more traditional wording, what should be performance testing strategy).

Drastic changes in the industry in recent years significantly expanded the performance testing horizon: agile development and cloud computing probably the most. Basically, instead on single way of doing performance testing (and all other were considered rather exotic), we have a full spectrum of different tests which can be done at different moments; so deciding what and when to test became a very non-trivial task heavily depending on the context. We need to create and run different tests mitigating different performance risks.

So the art of performance engineering is to find out the best strategy of combining different performance tests and other approaches to mitigate performance risks to optimize risk mitigation / costs ratio for, of course, the specific context.

This session will provide you the insights of understanding various types of performance risks, which  test techniques and practices to use in a specific context to measure and evaluate system performance, and how to interpret the data derived from these tests in order to drive performance engineering excellence.

When Start-up Meets Quality... A Short Story of QA Game Changer
Third time lucky...
You can't just face exactly the same problem again joining the new company, can you? The only problem is - this rule doesn't apply to the start-up environment. I've worked for three different start-ups so far, always getting on board with a clear mission in mind - to increase the value of the product by building a proper quality mindset and culture within the whole organization. The companies differed in almost every aspect: industry, structure, maturity, business approach and technological advancement. The one and only thing in common always was: a single tester clicking for a few years already until me making an appearance there!

During that time, the companies were growing and scaling up. Unfortunately, this change did not include the area of quality assurance. A gateway to disaster! Fortunately, at some point, a red flag was spotted which led to a simple but powerful conclusion: Oh no! We need to increase our quality asap!

And here my story begins! At first, it always looks like "mission impossible" - too many misleading hints, several unexpected traps and laser maze full of bugs ahead of you. But if you take a thoughtful jump and give yourself time, you can transform productive chaos into a quality driven environment - in other words, make the impossible, possible!

Undoubtedly, there are two paramount goals to be addressed at the company level:
- to increase the quality of the product,
- to build quality culture across the organization.

Yet, before you even start, there is step 0 - finding the answer to the basic question: WHY did all of this happen? Is it because of chaotic scaling up? Monetization priority? Lack of time/people? Obviously, you will have to build your own team (whatever it is, centralized or distributed one). It's inseparably connected with recruitment and personal development process. How to find the right people and let them grow in such a dynamic and changing environment?

I want to share with you mistakes made, lessons learned and solutions implemented, in a nutshell - my story of becoming a change agent of Quality Assurance.

Risk or Fear: What Drives Your Testing?
Many say they do risk-based testing, but walking the walk is showing to be more challenging than organizations realized. Teams are finding they end up testing "everything", which is counterproductive to a risk-based approach. The testing community must apply a truth telling question: What motivates your test coverage decisions? Fear or Risk?

Many teams are realizing after implementing a risk-based strategy, they continue to test from a place of fear as opposed to calculated risk. Others never reassess or renegotiate risk as their application matures. As the application under test matures, so must your strategy.

Key takeaways:
- Discernment: Test decisions, what is your real motivator?
- Embracing the concept, "What is good enough quality?"
- Reassessing risk by integrating new data
- How to overcome bias created by fear and previous failures

Improving Communication and Teamwork Using Perceiver Element Grid (PEG)
When we communicate on a project, we assume that our team members have the same understanding of the team values as we do. Unfortunately, that is usually not the case. If we take the word "commitment" or "responsibility" or "change", they are all open to interpretation.

What it means for me to be responsible is my personal opinion, not a universal rule of what responsibility is. In all companies I have worked for the main issue in the team is communication, and usually it comes down to misunderstanding.

The perceiver element grid (PEG) allows us to come up with a common understanding of team values and roles within the team using a simple grid. Using PEG in a 45 min season you will be able to eliminate miscommunication and significantly reduce communication issues within the team. The adaptation of the PEG grind on agile teams is based on the work of psychologist Harry Procter and George Kelly.

Key takeaways:
At the end of the session the participants will receive a template of the PEG they can use on their teams to improve understanding and communication. They will also receive instructions how to guide team members to fill the grid and interpret results together with the team.

This presentation is best suited for team leads, team manages and members of cross functional or self-organised teams.

Building Automation Engineers from Scratch
Creating automation engineers from manual testers is hard. Even if testers are willing, they have a lot of hurdles to get over to feel like the same kind of subject matter experts in automation as they are in manual testing.

As a career-long manual tester making the leap to automation, Jenny Bramble has experience to explain frustrations and provide solutions. She will discuss managing the expectations of your testers and their managers (what's the time frame? Why isn't this working?), techniques for teaching (such as games! Pair/mob programming! Software fundamentals!), and how to know when your testers have made it (what should manual testers be aiming for when they start?). You'll walk away from the talk feeling empowered to create a plan to build your automation engineers from scratch!

That talk will offer you the powerful new set of tools in your toolbox:
* The basic framework your manual testers need to be successful, including how to determine where the gaps in knowledge are and filling them.
* Advice on managing the expectations of your testers and management from time constraints to what success looks like.
* Several methods for teaching framed around a case study of a team that built itself up from the inside out and is running a successful automation suite.
* Facing and overcoming other challenges such as ability and perceived ability, resources, time, tooling, and how to get your team excited for a new chapter in their professional development.

The Lion and the Lioness have several differences between them, including their physical characteristics, their role within the social structure, or the paths they take during their lives.  The Lioness does more hunting and the Lion defends the territory.  Their roles have cross-over, but - like the Fuzzy and Techie people often assume the opposite for their roles in the wild.

As artificial intelligence and machine learning take increasingly more tasks that humans once performed, we need more than ever to understand the vital and critical skills of humans in our new world. Some of the skills needed now are not ones we have historically placed a high value on as technical professionals. If you majored in the humanities or social sciences, you were a fuzzy. If you majored in the computer sciences, you were a techie. This informal division has quietly found its way into a default assumption that has misled the business world for decades: that it's the techies who drive innovation.

But recently we've seen the counterintuitive reality of business today: it's actually the fuzzies - not the techies - who are playing the key roles in developing the most creative and successful new business ideas. They are often the ones who understand the life issues that need solving and offer the best approaches for doing so. It is they who are bringing context to code and ethics to algorithms. They also bring the management and communication skills - the soft skills that are so vital to spurring growth.

We will discuss the skill sets that really matter for technical teams. Let's explore some of today's most dynamic new companies, reveal breakthrough fuzzy-techie collaborations, and explore how such collaborations are at the center of innovation in business, education, and government - as well as why liberal arts are more relevant than ever in our techie world.

Learn how to embrace the fuzzy and techie in all of us, humanize our technology, empathize with our customers, and build world class software. As we move to a world driven by big data and powered by algorithms, techies (those who have studied engineering and computer sciences) are of great importance. However, as we prioritize Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) subjects, we must also consider the overlooked but valuable role that the Liberal Arts play in our technological world.

Fuzzies help us apply our new tools with context, consideration, and relevance to the greatest human problems. Moreover, as machines take on more routine tasks within our jobs, what's left are those human skills honed and refined through broad educations.

A new generation of entrepreneurs, those who are both fuzzy and techie, is fast emerging, and will be at the center of our future economy. Learn how to be among the leaders embracing both your fuzzy and techie self and thrive in this new world.

Agile has Stopped My Career Growth. Now What?
Test Centers of Excellence were very popular until a few years ago. Testing was seen as a centrally managed independent set of activities. This meant that the testers felt very powerful with a clear growth path. With the rise of adoption of Agile, testing has become decentralized and tester's growth path suddenly appears blurred.
Agile is seen by a lot of testers, especially of a certain experience range, as the adversary of Testing stopping their career growth. However, in reality Agile has more opportunities for testers.
This talk is aimed at helping people understand the role of a tester in Agile projects and removing a common misconception about Agile stopping career growth.
------
This talk is followed by a group discussion on the career path opportunities for Agile testers.

Too Fast Too Furious: A story of being first time QA manager
Quality leadership came to a lot of us as a gradual career progression, with years of experience. Some find themselves in leadership positions as the result of sudden organization changes.
Being a first time QA manager, unprepared and full of doubt, the unknown territory can frighten us. Add to that sometimes neither management nor we know with certainty exactly what to expect from a QA team.

In this talk I will take you through my personal journey of being a brand new manager in a startup world. A three step strategy to learn, implement, and scale has helped me set expectations with management for my team in the organization. I’ll share challenges we’re likely to face in first time manager roles and go back to implement this process to build a strong team.
Key takeaways:
  • Learn to be the QA Manager of a brand new team - to lead or to manage ?
  • Be prepared for upcoming struggles like budget, resource, process deadlines
  • Follow 3 step strategy to succeed like Learn from failure, POC
  • Hiring strategy to build a strong team - briefing and debriefing
  • Manage upwards and downwards efficiently by implementing goals and organization newsletter.

Workshop: The Personality Puzzle: Building a Solid Team
It's often said, "People don't quit a job, they quit a boss." This cannot be ignored. As a leader, it is inevitable for your personality to show up in how you operate, which is a good thing...but it can have some dark sides too. Are you truly aware of what your personality communicates to your team and how it makes them feel?

Your personality and the personalities of your team members are all communicating certain messages and feelings day in and day out. Developing team cohesion is one of the most fundamental components of short and long-term organizational success, but until you learn how to piece team personalities together for productivity, you’ll continue to leave unrealized potential on the table.

In this interactive workshop, we’ll explore how intentionally building personality-rich teams is a major contributing factor to an organization’s ability to achieve massive results and sustain quality talent. The next time you experience the super aggressive teammate, the people-pleaser, the overachiever, and the eccentric team member all on the same team, rather than seeing it as a trainwreck like most others would, you’ll have your personality toolkit to transform that team into a winning puzzle.

As a leader, you will be able to:
● Identify common personality types and behaviors
● Recognize how to blend diverse strengths for improved productivity
● Leverage Individual personality challenges to create more team cohesion

Measuring Release Quality and Delivering Release Value
Within a 2000+ employees company, it is very challenging to ensure that the needed quality is delivered to clients. Clients should have the same experience using the final product from release to release. My motivation for creating a metric started with a famous definition of quality by Jerry Weinberg, "Quality Is Value To Some Person" enriched later on by Michael Bolton with "at some time" and by James Bach with "who matters": "Quality Is Value To Some Person, At Some Time, Who Matters".

If we will not concretize and align upfront on the "values to persons who matter today", we will miss looking at our releases quality in a common way and taking the needed joint decisions. During the presentation the need for this new measurement will be discussed with the actions taken by all builders and consumers of the releases based on those measurements.

Release Quality Progress - Before releasing: The value oriented metric will be described, along with its visualization for better exploitation during release construction by all stakeholders.
Release Quality In Use - After releasing: The means for a feedback loop once the release is used by clients will be described, again with its corresponding visualization for better exploitation by all stakeholders.

The success of those metrics can be seen in how product development teams and management are relying on this data today to take the appropriate decisions regarding our releases:
- As a release board, do we release now?
- As a product owner, what did my team miss while building the product?
- As a client services consultant, what is the health of the release to anticipate impacts on my client project?

I will show how all teams worked together and were able to take joint decisions to achieve the targeted quality expected by clients.

Key learnings:
1. Quality of a product does not have a meaning without knowing the concerned persons who matter today and understanding very well what they value in the product.
2. A measure and corresponding visualization can be applied in a testers work place to drive the construction of a release based on the targeted values.
3. A measure and corresponding visualization can be applied in a testers work place to drive the feedback loop on a release based on the targeted values.

Fictional Test Data
Test data can tell a story at a glance. Most stories are obvious, like users in the QA5 environment with email addresses registered at qa5.com. There is an immediate value in the obvious stories; familiar conventions reveal the intent behind the data and make it easier to recognize and remember.

What value can be attributed to stories that are more whimsical and nuanced? Let's talk about Noah Count, the user who never registered, and Maury Wards, who maximizes the loyalty points system. Let's look at the many stories that can be told by test data and turn fake information to fiction.

Key learnings:
How to create the test data that tells a clear story, with believable details, and is carefully curated

Building Better Teams and Testers Through Play
Agile teams work incredibly hard to drive software and processes forward.  Sometimes we neglect the emotional side of our hard work, leaving teams brittle and less able to adapt and bend.  How do we release tension and form the strong bonds that a good team needs to be successful?

As children, we form strong bonds during recess or at play dates. As adults, we lose this sense of companionship and playfulness. Bring it back to your team with targeted fun activities that create a sense of mindfulness, improve skills, and are just downright enjoyable. Team building is the most difficult aspect of leadership--peer or otherwise. One of the best ways to facilitate team building is play!

Jenny Bramble will present a method for team building outside of the norm in play time. She will show how events can be arranged, when to do them, and what the benefits are for play time -- including stronger teams that work better together due to their powerful relationships between team members.

I once had to ask a student "Why is there a marble in your nose?" This question was a learning experience for me, as it led me down a path of questions I hadn't thought to ask before and revealed that the real challenge wasn't the stuck marble - it was that the student had outgrown naps and needed something productive to do while his classmates were sleeping!

People in tech come from a wide variety of backgrounds, which often influence how we carry out our roles. For instance, the skills involved in helping children transition smoothly from recess to naptime enabled me to successfully lead department-wide process changes. My experience teaching math to elementary students with an "I do, we do, you do" approach has helped me coach software engineers learning a new testing tool. And of course, my experience with the marble taught me the importance of asking questions and applying my curiosity, which has made me a better advocate for users and engineering teams.

Every experience matters! We all bring a variety of expertise and lessons learned from previous roles or industries, which allows us to think outside the box and challenge the status quo. It helps us include perspectives that might otherwise be lost or overlooked. Having a wider breadth of experience and knowledge makes us better at our jobs, and I hope that my talk inspires the audience to understand how their previous jobs have impacted and improved the way they work in software and technology.

You have a carefully selected team of talented, driven and hardworking individuals, but you feel like their results could be better. While you may have experienced some great successes together in the past, you feel like you have yet to knock it out of the park.

What's the reason for this lack of outstanding performance? Is someone on your team slacking? Is there a cultural shift at play? Are your people being pulled in too many different directions instead of rowing together towards a common goal?

It's time to get to the bottom of what is creating a drag on your team's A+ status! During this highly interactive and engaging session, you will discover the real reason for your team' bottlenecks, and you will learn how to challenge yourself and your team to perform at exceptionally higher levels.

Performance Testing & Engineering on AWS Cloud.

We are going to talk about the journey from pre AWS cloud to post AWS cloud. Talk about challenges, best practices, services that we need to leverage to effectively carry out performance testing on AWS cloud.

It’s an ocean and it takes a lot of effort and fine planning to reap benefits out of AWS cloud.

How Can Testing Teams Build Their Own Test Environments

We have seen a lot of times testing team complaining that they have been waiting on days and months to get test environment, and this becomes a pain when they have to test something to meet deadlines.

Depending on external teams for testing environment is a pain. We are going to talk about how we transitioned and built a testing team which was capable of building their own infrastructure, environments for all testing activities and how the entire process was automated based on test team requirements.

Embarking into the New World of AI-First: Survival Skills

What Needs to Change to Be Your Best?
We all want to be our best selves, but we probably don't consider this on a day by day basis.  We don't think I'm going to work to be an average leader.  We all have skills we must master to be our best selves.

I have been studying the mindsets and actions of the best in various fields and compared what they do to what I have done or haven't done. These are the problem areas that I struggle with and you may too. Please answer the following questions:

- Do you oftentimes find yourself resisting doing the very thing you need to be doing to become the best?
- Are you easily distracted and move from task to task or get caught up in busy work?
- Have you found yourself inconsistent when doing the work on learning or mastering a new skill?
- Do you skip practices because they are boring?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, this talk can help you address these problems if you put into place the solutions shared. We must honor the struggle, as Brendon Burchard has coined, as it will not be easy.

I will share ways to recognize "the resistance" that everyone encounters and give a way to overcome it by facing it for 5 minutes. I will share three ways that you can "ultra-learn" or master a skill. Consistency is key and tracking your habits will help improve the speed in which you conquer your skill. I will discuss the importance of developing focus and incorporating deliberate practice into your daily routines. At the end of the talk, you can develop your plan to ensure you are working on being your best self.

Transforming with Scaled Agile and Importance of Test Leadership
The range and nature of applications in most large enterprises can be very diverse and complex.  Similarly, we have mainframe systems, huge monoliths, micro-services and a whole variety of front-end platforms. All these products in conjunction create customer value and therefore must synchronize with one another. Delivering value at speed was therefore a challenge.

In a drive to improve time to market and product quality, our transformation to scaled agile began. Focus was put on building enablers to help teams implement continuous testing. While this could be called a DevOps transformation, it wasn't just that. New ways of working and a new leadership style was being introduced.

For all these different products to deliver value, release trains were formed stitching together many feature teams to delivering new features on the same cadence. Among the new cultural values was "autonomous teams", which meant agile teams should be empowered to operate independently. To some this meant there was no need for test leadership and the feature teams could do without them.

As new release trains came up and they started to operate, gaps started appearing. System level tests at the release train level, and across release trains absence could be seen. Also, testing enablers to help feature teams within release trains to deliver at speed required an overarching leadership looking after these needs. Creating synergies between test automation frameworks across, again, required a common platform.

While forming the test leadership, we learned a few things and caught on some key principles. These principles along with how the leadership was formed helped in giving us a holistic view of quality across the enterprise and most importantly, the ability to demonstrate business value to the end user instead of individual pieces of working software.

While the journey is going on and we will keep on evolving our strategy. Few gems we learned thus far have certainly been very valuable and can be of immense help to organizations looking to transform how they deliver software.

Intended audience:
- Senior Execs / Managers / Lead engineers who want to drive a transformation project

Some key leanings:
- In a nutshell, how SAFe delivers value at pace in an Enterprise
- Leadership and autonomy: are these two opposing forces?
- What problems you may run into without test leadership
- Less focus on defining processes, more on implementing and learning from the execution
- Build synergies, that's the only way automation delivers

Full Stack Testing is a Culture : Drive your team to Embrace Change
Many teams aim only in having a bug free system. How can you make your team believe in delivering the true quality of the end product? How can you drive your team to understand that skipping non functional testing like performance and security testing could lead to the breach of your product quality ? How can you make them understand the importance of CI/CD in the testing lifecycle? How can you pour the passion into them to move forward to make a change?

Setting up a team that has these skills could make this possible, but do they believe in what they do? How can you make them actually feel the essence of quality being a culture that does not focus alone on reporting bugs?

Let us discuss ways on making your team walk in the path of Full Stack Testing, so that the team knows their vision and the mission. The team should move into a position where any member of the team can understand the testing requirements of the application and execute them. Drive the entire quality team to understand the skills that each of them possess.

To understand this, let's look at what traditional QA practice is. There are several areas and types when it comes to Quality Assurance: Testing, Test Automation, Performance, etc. Generally, there are teams specialized in each of these areas, executing each of these test types. Here we need to be able to pick anyone from the quality team to be able to cover any of the above test types.

Similar to the rise of full stack engineering that brought the end of specialized front-end and back-end developers, and brought about the age of engineers that can build a product end to end independently, the time for QA to follow suit is near. Full-stack quality engineers are individuals capable of working on all aspects of quality across all the application's layers, using different testing methods. They will think about the many different aspects of product quality, such as functionality, usability, performance, security etc, and will also be familiar with test automation strategies and technologies.

The full-stack QE will have a rich mix of domain knowledge, technical skills, and testing expertise. This is the trend that quality engineering is flowing into today. This talk will cover how we can get our teams to explore this venture.

Growing a Culture of Quality
Long ago there was a time where testing was purely seen as an activity by a siloed team who executed 1000's of tests towards the end of a project. In the modern world, this is still a very real situation in some companies, but on the whole, testing as a collaborative, continuous activity is much more the norm.

But getting to that stage is not easy. For some reason, there has historically been a stigma attached to testing as a lesser activity that slows down the release of a project. Changing such mindset is a huge obstacle to get over.

In places where testing is perceived in a negative light, it is possible to move forward, but it will take hard work to change the mindset of the people who don't know better. You need to use the power of persuasion, while coaching and building collaborative best practices that tech teams can buy into.

In this talk, I will walk through ways to get Testing at the table for discussions and build a culture of Quality, where the business accepts the value that testing brings and helps fight our corner when needed. This ultimately comes down to communication in the right ways and showing the value that Testing can bring to a situation.

What Can Testers Do to Build Their Tester Mindset and Break Silos at Work?
Managers have the ability to split organizations into teams, programs and functions. This causes a deep level of ignorance, duplication of work, less knowledge sharing or even worst. In this case, people feel they are working alone, not recognized and not supported which is the main 'WHY' people left their job and start seeking for better scope.

In order to avoid all those problems, organizations are making new changes and ways of transformation to make their collaborators more flexible. That's why communities of practice are built. In fact, the main reason is to create a link between different people and connect them independently from the team they are working on.
Those communities offer multiple advantages to members and to organization.

In this talk, Emna will brings examples of testing community of practice development. She will show you why communities of practice are an important part of your agile organization and what role they can play. Also she will refer to the importance of gamification in building those communities and other helpful strategies to connect people interested in testing using different methods.

Transforming Insider Inc.'s Test Automation Strategy
This presentation is an experience report on how the Test Engineering team at Insider Inc revamped their test automation strategy. I'll talk about the challenges we faced with an existing suite of automation tests, how we replaced it and our considerations when choosing a new framework.

I'll showcase how having a vision for the team, instilling trust in team members and having strong leadership brings about positive change. I will also share what I learned as a new manager tasked with rebuilding the team's test strategies.

Key learnings:
- How to take a step back and re-evaluate your test frameworks and tools.
- Inspire test engineers and managers to trust their instincts and each other.
- Rebuilding a team and embracing a culture shift while advocating for quality.
- Motivating team members to take on new challenges and see them flourish and grow.

No Team, No Tests, No Time or How To Survive and Thrive when Resources are Limited
Understaffed QA Team. No time for testing. No time for automation. A startup that does not have anything, so you need to build the team, select the tools, create tests in the shortest possible time under enormous pressure. A new project that has one QA per twenty developers. Low-quality product with constant issues in productions.
When you are in any of these situations you might feel like you are on a sinking boat: every time you patch one hole, it starts leaking in ten new places. How to survive? What should you do first? Document tests or automate them? Select tools or hire a team? Establish processes or test the releases? It may look like there is no light at the end of the tunnel, but you can overcome all these challenges if you keep calm and have a plan!

Takeaways:
Practical advices on how to build a QA team and QA process from scratch
How to select automation tool if there are too many unknowns
How to build test infrastructure when resources are limited
How to improve the quality of the product without adding more resources

Inclusive Test Automation
Test Automation has solely been done by a separate automated testing team for a long time. The task for automation is usually taken up after all the development and manual testing is done. The automated testers are also not included in any brainstorming sessions thus their overall knowledge of the product is limited.

Once the documented test cases are automated, it tends to lack in areas that are well known to other team members. The test automation starts with small misses but in the end become huge and problematic. Although a lot seems to have been automated, still bugs seem to seep through them.

The automation then stops giving the results that were once promised and the team starts to look at automation as a costly activity.

Only Test automation cannot solve this problem. The quality of the test automation needs to be improved too. Thus, comes the need for inclusive test automation.

Inclusive test automation aims to make test automation a team activity where test creation and test reviews are not tough for non-technical members of the team.

When automated tests look and feel like simple English language with no layering of code - it becomes easy to catch any gaps earlier on. This can also lead to frequent and parallel test automation and more efficient continuous testing.

Testsigma, a unified test automation platform, is built with the focus of enabling everyone in the team to contribute to the quality of test automation. In this session, we will see how.

Let There be Light in Your Performance Tests, Invade the Darkness
Performance of the the end-product has become vital, hence performance testing has started getting more importance in the software development cycle. It is great to dive in to performance testing but are you conducting it in a manner that would actually solve your problem.

Even-though performance is being tested, are the real performance issues still being swept under the rug? Have you wondered whether you are doing right thing? Are you missing something?

This talk would go over the techniques and tips that helped my team and myself to work out performance tests so that we mimic the real issues underlying in the application at an early stage. What needs to be considered from the very instant of requirement gathering to maintaining. End of the day the tests added more value to the quality of the application and achieved the whole purpose.

Performance testing is a need, but there is no value if you are not approaching in a way that it adds value to the application quality. Therefore let us look at conquering the real mess.

This talk will be helpful for test leads who want to get their team introduced into performance testing or they have started conducting performance tests but are not getting anywhere with it.

From Manual To Humanual Testing
In the era of QA's top priority being "end-user satisfaction", all Test professionals have an opportunity to provide so much value in the development process, as QA organizations adopt a more humanized approach to compliment the advantages brought by Test Automation and AI - without needing to learn how to be uber-technical. Thus the birth of the "Humanual Tester."

Join Josh Brenneman and Kirk Walton in this session on how the Manual Testing role has changed over time, and how a new kind of tester has evolved - the Humanual Tester. Josh and Kirk will discuss how to cultivate the skills necessary to do Humanual Testing, including: focusing on user empathy, defining opportunity, and ideation techniques to help us "Shift Left" in keeping the focus on end user satisfaction as the true mark of quality.

Key Takeaways:
- Why User Empathy is the killer QA skill of the 2020
- An overview of Design Thinking and User-Centered Design, and how they help us "Shift Left"
- Specific examples of Persona-based testing: learn how to test in the shoes of the end-user and ensure you are meeting their needs
- A "Quick Start" guide to quickly incorporate Humanual Testing into your team including persona templates

Testopsy: What Really Happens During Testing?
Every software product we use has been tested, in some way. The people who test may or may not be professionally trained. They may or may not have designed their tests based on systematic methods. So, how do testers learn their craft? How do they perform testing?

Field studies of software projects are difficult to find, partly due to the expense of carrying out such studies and partly due to the confidential or otherwise socially sensitive nature of engineering work. Furthermore, books about software testing are generally not written based on close and systematic research into actual practice, but rather upon the opinions and recollections of apparent experts (prominent examples include Beizer 1995; Copeland 2004; Hetzel 1993; Kaner 1999; 2002).

However, the literature of expertise warns us that experts may not have a clear understanding of their own methods and processes; they may be unreliable witnesses to their own work-- despite being fully able to perform that work successfully (Johnson 1983).

I am systematically studying how testers actually test. This includes their reasoning processes, mental schemata, social behavior, and work products. This study calls for the standard methods of ethnomethodological research: trained observation, activity recording, note-taking, spoken protocol analysis, and subsequent coding and analysis. These are well-established tools for studying human expertise (Clancey 2006).

There have been efforts in the testing industry to informally record and study testing. James Bach calls such studies “testopsies” (Bach 2020) and recommends them as regular professional practice for process improvement. In the academic world, some small studies of testing practices have been published. There have also been studies of analogous problem-solving processes, such as exploring the functionality of an electronic toy (Klahr 2002), solving a computerized puzzle (Weinberg 1966), working a photocopy machine (Suchman 1987), or navigating a warship (Hutchins 1995).

Among the elements I propose to study is the development and representation of mental models held by testers. These may include models of the product, project, and the process of testing itself. Mental models are much discussed in the research literature of human-computer interaction as well as the literature of expertise in general (Gentner and Stevens 2014).

I take as a premise that intentional test design begins with a model that has been constructed at the moment or retrieved from memory. (In the absence of some such model, the tester would not be able to operate, or even recognize a computer!) This model is then amended and improved as the tester learns about the product through interview, reading, or exploration of the product itself. Mental models are input, mediator, and outcome of software testing.

Published test design techniques are usually based explicitly on some model of the product that is then “covered” with test cases via some heuristic. There is also such a thing as “model-based testing,” but it does not refer to testing based on models. Instead, it refers to the use of explicitly specified models used as a basis for the automatic generation of test data, test procedures, or test oracles (Apfelbaum 1995). The research I am doing will focus mainly on mental models. However, one aspect of my research will be the examination of the interaction between mental models and explicitly specified models.
My hypothesis is that both novice and expert testers rely, in a different way, on extensive tacit knowledge (Collins 2010) to accomplish the mission of testing. Testing requires social competence to perform and cannot be performed by machines (Collins 1998).

Humans perform sensemaking (Weick 1995), modeling, and risk evaluation (Kasperson et al. 1988), all of which are socially situated. I further hypothesize that claims as to the automatability of testing are based on an impoverished folk theory of testing that cannot account for the behavior and success of real testers, nor for the expectations put on testers by stakeholders.
By studying testers in the act of testing, I hope to uncover and document a more robust and respectable account of what testers really do, what competencies good testing requires, and how those competencies arise.

My speech will cover, among others:
- What is my research about?
- What is the nature of my research?
- What could empower it?
- Where have I gone so far?
- How can every tester contribute?

Leading the New Generation of Software Testing
It has been said “Everything rises and falls on leadership”. The world has experienced many changes over the last few decades, and organizations must respond to this constant change at much greater speed than ever before.

Many companies are eliminating the role of the test manager in agile teams and creating flat organizations which combine the roles of dev and test into a hybrid function. Leadership is title agnostic. You can lead from all levels within the organization.

Regardless of the hierarchy, testing is called on to lead success within the project teams. This requires the ability to educate, inform, and support the project team, the executive team, and the stakeholders.

In agile contexts, the tester must be equipped with the ability to clearly communicate the value of testing and the results of the evaluations conducted for each product delivery. Collaboration with all teams becomes critical.

This workshop will focus on exercises which map to all levels within the testing team. Experienced leaders will be called on to give their experiences and share their approaches to success. New leaders will be called on to share their inputs, suggestions, and experiences as well.

TUTORIAL: Leadership IQ in the Age of AI (1st half)
Have you ever needed a way to measure your testing leadership IQ in the age of AI? Or been in a performance review where the majority of time was spent discussing your need to improve as a leader? Have you have ever wondered what your core leadership competencies are and how to build on and improve them now with new technologies like AI, Blockchain, IOT, and Voice?

Jennifer Bonine shares a toolkit to help you do just that. This toolkit includes a personal assessment of your leadership competencies and the evolution of testing and testing leadership. Integrating AI into your testing activities can be intimidating, but in reality, it is pretty easy, and it just takes some understanding and work. Learn how to directly apply AI to real-world testing problems without having a Ph.D. in computer science.

Jennifer will share a wide survey of all the different ways AI is applied to software testing today. Get some hands-on experience using AI with a testing focus with no coding skills required. Join Jennifer as she explores a set of eight dimensions of successful leaders, provides suggestions on how you can improve competencies that are not in your core set of strengths, and describes techniques for leveraging and building on your strengths. These tools can help you become a more effective and valued testing leader in your organization. Exercises help you gain an understanding of yourself and strive for balanced leadership through recognition of both your strengths and your development opportunities.

TUTORIAL: Leadership IQ in the Age of AI (2nd half)

TUTORIAL: Effective Solutions for Enterprise Test Automation (1st half)
Automation can be an effective tool within an organization’s software testing strategy if implemented correctly. Automation is often presented as a silver bullet or magical solution to QA; however, experience and practice has taught the QA community there are pitfalls on the path to automation success. A lack of experience, time, and budget inhibits the viability and long-term sustainability of any such automation rollout.

In this workshop, we’ll learn how to build a robust automation program across an organization to improve application quality, testing efficiency, and lower operational costs. The core components of such a program involve test leadership, planning & estimation, script design, execution, reporting, and metrics. The maturity of an enterprise automation program is a long process that requires buy-in from both key stakeholders and application subject matter experts (SMEs).

Thomas have built out automation programs at three companies, each in a different industry. Regardless of the variety of applications under test or the maturity of the QA practice, the principles a test leader will follow in building an automation program will remain the same.

Learning Outcomes:
*Learn how to integrate automation into the SDLC as an upfront concern
*Streamline the tech stack through regular tooling audits that match the company budget & technical skillet of employees
*Develop end-to-end testing standardization across multiple teams
*Integrate automated validations into continuous integration (unit, integration, functional, etc.)
*Promote environment & data synchronization
*Increase visibility of work with QA project traceability and metrics

TUTORIAL: A Whole Team Approach to Testing in Continuous Delivery (1st half)
Many testers today find themselves on teams who decide to adopt continuous delivery and
DevOps practices, but leave responsibility for all testing activities to the testers. The end result
is often more testing to do, less time to do it, and more stress for testers!

To succeed with continuous delivery, the whole delivery team needs to take responsibility for
the necessary continuous testing. We need more than infrastructure to get small changes out
frequently. We need confidence that those changes won’t cause customer pain, we need quick
feedback to learn about the impact of those changes.

In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn how to visualize their deployment pipeline.
You’ll practice using a test suite canvas to discuss what questions each stage in your pipeline
needs to answer, and understand the value each step provides. You’ll work in groups to come
up with new experiments to help shorten feedback cycles, make sure all essential types of
testing – not only automated ones - are done continually, and fit testing into the continuous
world.

Whether your tests take minutes or days, and whether your deploys happen hourly or quarterly,
you’ll discover benefits. You’ll participate in a simulation to visualize your team’s current path to
production and uncover risks to both your product and your deployment process. No laptops
required, just bring your curiosity.

Learning outcomes:
* How to use the test suite canvas to design a pipeline that gives your team confidence to
release frequently
* How to analyze pipelines from different perspectives to create shorter feedback loops
and mitigate risks
* Ways your team can design experiments to address the many challenges of testing in a
continuous world

This class is limited to 20 participants

TUTORIAL: How to Create High-Performing Tech Teams in Today's Market (1st half)
When it comes to a successful technology organization, great teams start with great people. But building great teams (and keeping them together) can be tough, particularly given the uncertainty of today’s market. It stands to reason that the red-hot demand for technology professionals will return, and being prepared for a competitive talent market will give you a leg up when it comes to building high-performing teams.

Join Kirk Walton for this workshop as we focus on three critical activities for any Technology Leader: building a great team, attracting talented members to join, and once you’ve built that team, how to retain them.
First, we’ll focus on tools you can use to assess your current team, identify gaps (that may have been caused due to recent events) and strategies to create a game plan on how to fill those gaps.

Second, we’ll focus on how to attract the talent you need to build the best teams possible. This will include questions to not only identify “the right fit” for your team, but to use the interview as a tool to sell prospective candidates on why your team is their best option.

We’ll have a particular focus on the impacts of the past few months on technology teams, and how attracting, hiring, and onboarding top talent has changed in an increasingly virtual world.
Finally, we’ll focus on retaining your high-performing team by creating an amazing employment experience that they will never want to leave – especially in today’s “New Normal.”

Class Takeaways:
  • Kirk will introduce assessment tools with a keen focus on soft skills, not just technical skills, and why they are so important in building the best team possible
  • Kirk will leave attendees with a persona template – which for many, could replace the traditional (i.e. mundane) job description
  • Kirk will also leave attendees with a list of “must-ask” interview questions that reveal candidate motivation and hot buttons to ensure you are identifying top talent, and then how to sell the candidate on why your team is the best option for them as the market starts to grow once again

TUTORIAL: Strategic Advantage: Test Strategy (1st half)
We all want to test fast and test smart. As the time available for testing shrinks with
continuous integration and frequent or continuous deployment, it becomes ever more
critical to think strategically, whether you are testing a single story, an entire application
or an integrated suite of applications.
Strategic testing is all about how you make the best use of time and any other resources
available to you: to mitigate risks, find important bugs and provide your stakeholders with
information that really matters to them about the software.
This tutorial teaches simple yet powerful techniques to decide quickly what, how, and
when you and your whole team need to test.
Topics to be covered include:
 Understanding what product quality means to your key stakeholders in practical
terms you can use to direct testing.
 Driving out risks, principles, or organisational rules that could direct test priorities
or severely constrain testing.
 Deciding how to determine testing scope and coverage.
We’ll use simple, flexible media—such as mindmaps and diagrams—for working through
strategies and communicating them clearly.

TUTORIAL: Personal Leadership Development for Quality Professionals (Part 1)
Software cannot be tested to be right or wrong. The desired outcome of testing is quality and reducing risk for people who matter. Yet, testers, test managers, and quality coaches are often challenged to deliver absolute results.

We see testing and QA as value and quality driven, social, and collaborative activities. We treat the absolute and objective as terms for interaction, dynamics, and means to drive quality and context. Testing influences others far beyond the objective results we deliver with it.

In this tutorial, you will be exploring the impact of your personal thinking and your values on coaching and managing quality, testing software. We will offer you a management perspective combined with a philosophical and psychological perspective on leadership.

This tutorial aims to increase your consciousness about your personal motivations and perspectives. It’s about personal growth in leadership. The tutorial is ‘experiential’ in the sense that you will learn through a combination of short lectures and exploration and experiencing. It is imperative, that you are eager to participate in the facilitated activities in the tutorial.

TUTORIAL: Driving Quality Outcomes (Part 2)
Second part of the class:

In this workshop, the participants will collaboratively train their abilities to influence the social and organizational outcomes of the work performed personally and by their teams.

We will offer you a management-perspective combined with a philosophical and psychological perspective on leadership. You will be given the chance to use the two perspectives as tools or means to increase your understanding of the needs of your stakeholders and their strategic needs. You have experienced leading, motivating, managing testing; we will train your ability to act, producing significant outcomes for stakeholders.

The tutorial is ‘experiential’ in the sense that you will learn through a combination of short lectures and exploration and experiencing. It is imperative, that you are eager to participate in the facilitated activities in the tutorial.

The goal for us is for you to experience clarity, power, and virtuosity for action in your daily work with software testing and quality.
